Private Label Lighting Housings: Marking, Cartons and Artwork

Private label in lighting housings is mostly a question of what goes where: your brand on the body, the carton and the instruction sheet; the rating information where the standard requires it; and a proof approved before anything is printed in volume.

What can carry your brand

ItemTypical method
Housing bodyLaser marking or printing
Rating labelPrinted label, applied at packing
Retail cartonColour-printed to your artwork
Instruction sheetPrinted to your layout
Master / export cartonOEM carton printed to your specification

The practical point is that these are separate process steps, not one switch. A brand that wants laser marking on the body and a printed retail carton is specifying two operations with two lead times, and the carton is usually the later one.

Laser marking or printed label — which one

Laser marking is permanent and reads as part of the product; it suits a body surface that will be seen. A printed label is faster to change and easier to revise when a detail moves, which matters if your labelling carries variable information. Many buyers use both: marking for the brand, a label for the compliance data.

Artwork is confirmed against a proof before mass printing

Print is the one part of a housing order that cannot be corrected after the fact — a carton printed with a wrong address or a superseded logo is scrap. So artwork is confirmed against a printed proof before the mass run. Build that step into your schedule rather than treating it as an afterthought in the final week.

The parts that must not be branded freely

A rating label is not decoration. Wording, ratings and any regulatory marking on it have to be consistent with how the product is actually placed on the market and with the compliance route the brand owner has chosen. We prepare the label to your specification; what goes on it is your call as the brand owner, and it is worth a second look before printing rather than after.

The same applies to the CE mark on the finished luminaire. A housing supplied as a mechanical part does not carry that marking on our side; it sits with the brand owner and the driver chosen. Getting that boundary right at the artwork stage is far cheaper than correcting it on a container.

Retail packaging versus export packaging

These are different jobs. Retail packaging is designed to be seen and handled on a shelf, and it needs the artwork and protection appropriate to that. Export packaging is designed to survive a container and a pallet: individual protection, corner reinforcement and a master carton specified for the transit. If a product is going to both a retailer and a distributor, say so, because the two cartons are usually different specifications.

What to send with an artwork request

  • Vector artwork for the carton, with the dieline if you have one
  • The exact wording for the rating label, and the standard you are filing under
  • Logo files in a print-ready format, plus any colour reference
  • Language versions required for the destination market
  • Whether barcodes are needed, and which symbology

Send those five items and the proof comes back in a form you can approve or correct once, rather than in three rounds.

Frequently asked questions

Can you private-label the housings and the packaging?

Yes. Laser marking on the body, printed rating labels, custom colour boxes, printed instruction sheets and OEM master cartons are all available. Artwork is confirmed against a printed proof before mass printing.

Who is responsible for the CE mark on the finished luminaire?

The housing is supplied as a mechanical part, so the CE marking on the finished luminaire sits with the brand owner and the driver chosen. That boundary is best settled at the artwork stage rather than later.

Are retail cartons and export cartons the same?

No. Retail packaging is designed to be seen on a shelf; export packaging is specified to survive a container and pallet, with individual protection, corner reinforcement and a master carton. A product going to both usually needs two specifications.
